M. C. Escher (1902-1972)

In the book, "Godel, Escher and Bach," Hofstadter describes Maurits Cornelis Escher as "the creator of some of the most intellectually stimulating drawings of all time.  Many of them have their origin in paradox, illusion, or double-meaning.  Mathematicians were among the first admirers of Escher's drawings, and this is understandable because they often are based on mathematical principles of symmetry or pattern."
They are, in his mind, "the most beautiful and powerful visual realizations of this notion of Strange Loop."

I must concede that it is absolutely impossible to describe M. C. Escher, or his work, without graphics.  Since the loop here doesn't have any, I have to send a link off.   I like www.worldofescher.com best, for it's coherence, completeness, interactivity, and images.   Check out the gallery.  Add one yourself.
